David Dykes - 2014

Mr. Dykes started his surety journey in 1972 right out of school, having graduated from the University of Toronto earlier that year.  He became a fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada in 1977.

His career path took him to the west coast where he worked as a broker with Reed Stenhouse (now Aon) before returning to the company ranks in Edmonton with the Guarantee Company of North America. In September 1998 he was named President and CEO of Western Surety Company in Regina. During his nine year tenure with Western Surety, the company’s revenue nearly tripled from $6.5 million to $17.8 million.

Throughout his career, Mr. Dykes always made time to give back to the industry. He was with SAC from the get-go; first as a charter member of the Western/Prairies Regional Committee where he went on to serve as its Chair.  In 2002, he was elected to the Board of Directors as the first board representative from Western Surety and in 2005, he was elected Chairman of the board.

As Chair, he helped to redefine its role; from that of an administrative overseer, to one of true leader. He was instrumental in shaping the board into a more cohesive body where individual firms learned to put aside short term parochial interests and work toward the betterment of the industry.

Even after stepping down as Chair in 2006, Mr. Dykes continued to be an influential voice at the board table until 2014. His experience, insight and ability to see the forest though a dense jungle of trees helped to simplify even the most vexing and complex issues.  His legacy of contribution to the association and industry will always be appreciated.
