Gary Corby - 2011

Although born and raised in Toronto, Mr. Corby left his hometown to attend St Lawrence University in New York on a hockey scholarship.  Shortly after his graduation in 1963, he joined the surety industry with Aetna Casualty and Surety Company in Hartford, Connecticut and attended Aetna’s now fabled “surety school”.  In May 1969 he returned to Toronto, continuing to work with Aetna.  Mr. Corby left Aetna and moved to the Guarantee Company of North America and built up a significant book of business in Ontario and Western Canada from 1974 to 1981.

After his departure from the Guarantee Company of North America, Mr. Corby moved to the brokerage side of the industry, becoming a partner in what was then a family-owned Toronto-based firm.  Over the next 30 years, he turned the firm into one of Ontario’s, and Canada’s, leading privately held surety brokerages, employing over 20 people specifically dedicated to the surety business in four offices in Ontario.

Mr. Corby was an inaugural member of SAC’s Ontario Regional Committee and was an active member of numerous trade associations including the CCA, TCA, OGCA, OSWCA and NASBP.

In 2014, Mr. Corby celebrated 50 years in the business.  He remains a tireless advocate of the surety product and business and he believes the role of both surety and broker goes far beyond simply issuing paper. He constantly provides both advice and guidance to contractors, owners and young surety underwriters and many in the business have benefited from his mentoring.

Gary Corby (middle) is congratulated by his sons, Doug and Wade.  Like their father, both sons work in the industry!
